How To Clean Aircast Walking Boot

wwwgirl Senior Member (female) Join Date: Apr 2010 Location: USA Posts: 250 | Hi everyone. I was given a walking boot at the emergency room earlier. Anyway, I have some questions about using the boot and about caring for it. Okay, first of all, does anyone have any tips on walking in this thing? I find it to be rather difficult to walk in it and I seem to easily lose my balance while in it. What do you recommend? Second, how do you keep one of these things clean? What can I use to clean it? Can I put it in a washing machine (obviously excluding the plastic)? How else might I clean it? I am afraid that it will accumulate bacteria in it and I don't want to end up with some kind of infection or something from that. Anyway, any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

When it came time to walk, doc told me to take it off, this was 12 weeks, because it was uneven. But lots of folks are told to walk with them, but I think earlier then 12 weeks. I wondered about keeping it clean. I was afraid to wash it, incase it got screwed up. I asked for another liner, but ended up getting the wrong size. Funky boots, go with the territory, I am afraid. Could maybe handwash it before bed and hope its dry by morning. Maybe try fluff in the dryer. I wouldn't use heat just in case. If you wreck it, your screwed. |

So, it took you 12 weeks before you were able to quit using your boot? Wow! |

I started with mine with crutches, then progressed to a cane, and finally just focusing on the rocking motion of the boot. This of course depends on the boot type however and what you are being treated for since if it's a tendon issue they sometime add a wedge which makes you feel like you're wearing one high heel. I found that when I was able to walk with it, if I just trie to stay aware of the difference it'd go smoothly. Quote: Second, how do you keep one of these things clean? What can I use to clean it? Once again, boot type. I have black ones that the lining doesn't come out of. Those just get a wash down with some Dawn or antibacterial soap and sundried outside. I had a grey boot from the hospital orginially and post-op after my first surgery, which the inside lining was removable. It stuck on with velcro I think, but they didn't tell us that. We pulled it out, hand washed it, and put it out to sundry. Never had an issue with infections or anything. Good luck. |

Titchou Senior Veteran (female) | Re: Walking Boot Usage and Care Questions You need to find a shoe for the other foot that is the same height as the boot - whether it's a sneaker style, low heeled boot or shoe, whatever. I had to do that for a surgical shoe and it made things so much better. |

When I was out & about and it needed cleaning I would use baby wipes for the exterior as they dry quick & are non slippy hope this helps |

It dries pretty fast and you can leave the fabric right in boot, and not worry about it losing shape in the washer or drier. I have had many boots, through out the course of my foot problems, I am 8 wks post op and was just put back into the trusty aircast boot, despite having had to wear it for 4 months prior to surgery! I have had a total of 5, I once tried to wash the inside of one that was worn, i tried it on that one first to see how it would hold up. It did not hold up well at all. Christina |

Missyluke Senior Veteran (female) | Re: Walking Boot Usage and Care Questions Funny Zerk, but you are right - it is us women who worry about keeping the boot clean! My boot's liner came out so I hand washed it and let it dry overnight. I was put in the boot at 8 weeks post op. I found the boot to be extremely awkward to walk in and could not find any other shoe for my other foot to get me at the right height. At 10 weeks I had to go back to the doctor for an issue and was still using a crutch. At this time, I got the go ahead to wear a sneaker and lose the crutch. Good luck. |
